Trout Fest 2025

The Deschutes River Alliance held its 3rd Annual Trout Fest this past weekend, and Royal Treatment was in attendance with the world-famous "Bug Boat." Joel and Jennifer made the trek to Maupin early on Saturday morning in time to capture a few bugs near Wapinitia, then set up camp with a large contingent of industry professionals and Trout fishing fanatics.
Survivors from Friday evening's live music and adult beverages were moving relatively slowly first thing in the morning, but like rattlesnakes and lizards, they warmed up as the sun cleared the canyon.
Maupin rolled out blue skies and light breezes to start the event, but as temperatures warmed, the downriver wind picked up to a respectable 16~18+ mph, which caused some concern for the less prepared. A few EZ-Up tents proved to be Easier-Down models as well when gusts overwhelmed the makeshift anchors, leaving vendors to bask in the beautiful late May sunshine for the rest of the day.
Tackle makers were well-represented, and attendees were able to test cast a variety of rods under "reel-life" challenging conditions, in addition to sitting in on various how-to clinics. "Project Healing Waters" and "I Fish, I Belong" shared information about their organizations, with "I Fish, I Belong" spearheading a river cleanup on Sunday. Overall, support for the efforts of the Deschutes River Alliance to protect our favorite river was the reason for this now-annual gathering.
Lunchtime found us visiting the Taco Truck, which provided some of the best Chicken Tacos we've ever had and featured ice-cold Coke in glass bottles, bringing back favorite memories for many. Adult beverages were also available to quench the thirst of those in attendance.
Noted entomologist Rich Hafele enjoyed the day, holding a streamside bug clinic on the river before joining the crowd in the Oasis Campground for the rest of the festivities. Rick eventually made his way to the "Bug Boat," where he shared his vast knowledge with those drawn to the mini Clackacraft filled with mystery. It was a pleasure to see his excitement at discovering something hidden among the gravel and rocks, and explaining how to identify it.
While we expected to see plenty of kids gathering around the Bug Boat, we were surprised by the number of avid adult anglers stopping in to learn about the aquatic insects on display, proving that we can all learn something new about the sport we love. This experience has given us fresh ideas for our next Bug Boat showing. We are really looking forward to next year's event!
