Hot Spot Softy

The Soft Hackled fly dates back to my early days in the Sierra's and is a pattern I use in all trout waters. Varying the colors and textures of materials and hook sizes one could imitate many insects in your favorite trout stream.

I fish this fly on the swing, sometimes pulsing and stripping the fly, but primarily swinging the fly under tension and retrieving it with an erratic strip. The takes are often aggressive and exciting just like a steelhead take.

This version came about from tying Euro nymphs with hot tags. The hot tag worked so well I added it into other fly's with equal success. I am constantly inspired by new materials and ways I can introduce them into my classic fly's. This was a no brainer for me as it was easy to incorporate these modern materials into one of my favorite patterns, the classic soft hackle.

I hope you have as much success with this fly as I have

Love Bryan!

Nice fly. I was planning on tying a few, but when I got to my bench I discovered that I was completely out of peppers. Guess I'll I'll have to go to Freddies first.
