Volunteer for Salmon Watch

Joel La Follette - Wednesday, August 29, 2018

Last fall I volunteered for two Salmon Watch field trips near Mt Hood on the Zig Zag River. The events were educational for the students and very rewarding for me. If you would like to share your love of the outdoors with today's youth perhaps you should sign up to be a Salmon Watch volunteer.

Salmon Watch is an award-winning outdoor environmental education program founded in 1993 that brings middle and high school students outdoors to natural stream sites to witness wild salmon spawning and learn about Pacific Northwest ecology.

This season, Salmon Watch is hosting over 40 field trips with 20 schools at beautiful Pacific Northwest stream sites, getting over 1,500 students outdoors to connect with and learn about the natural world.

Field trips take place on some of our region’s most iconic rivers in Mt. Hood National Forest, the Columbia River Gorge, and the Mid-Coast Range- weekdays during September, October and November.

Four volunteer educators teach on each field trip (avg. 7:1 instructor-student ratio), facilitating the field trip learning stations: salmon biology, macroinvertebrate identification, water quality testing, and riparian observation/nature awareness.

Teaching a field station for our middle and high school classes is fun and rewarding, and who doesn’t love spending a day on the river?

The first step is to fill out their quick, online: Volunteer Educator Application

There are New Volunteer Training Sessions scheduled at Dabney State Recreation Area on Saturday, September 1st and Saturday, September 15th, from 9am to 1pm.

Please email Program Director, Rachel Walsh, to sign up for a training session and to volunteer.

Trailer Trash Thursday Brother and Sister Edition

Joel La Follette - Thursday, August 09, 2018

I took my brother fishing once, he broke my Winston rod almost instantly. Well, actually it was my wife's rod. Which is perfect because he was wearing her waders too. I then loaned him my rod and he caught a fish. I'm not sure who was more excited, me, him or the fish. Maybe I'll see if my sister wants to go fishing...
